Ohm’s Law for Vapers: Resistance, Power and Why Sub-Ohm Needs Care

Short answer: Ohm’s law links voltage, resistance and current: lower resistance at the same voltage means more current and more power. At 3.7 volts, a 1.0Ω coil makes about 13.7 watts, while a 0.3Ω coil makes about 45.6 watts and pulls over 12 amps. Pod kit and disposable users don’t need to calculate anything.

The three numbers

Voltage is the push from the battery. Resistance, measured in ohms (Ω), is how much the coil resists that push. Current, in amps, is what flows as a result. Power, in watts, is what actually heats the coil.

  • Current = voltage ÷ resistance
  • Power = voltage² ÷ resistance

Worked numbers at 3.7 volts

Coil resistance Current Power
1.2Ω 3.1 A 11.4 W
1.0Ω 3.7 A 13.7 W
0.6Ω 6.2 A 22.8 W
0.3Ω 12.3 A 45.6 W

Halving resistance doubles current. That is the whole story, and it’s why the bottom rows matter.

Why sub-ohm building needs care

Every battery has a safe continuous current rating. Build a coil low enough and you can ask a cell for more than it’s rated to give, which can overheat it. Anyone building their own coils should know their battery’s rating and check each build with a proper ohm reader before firing it.

If you use a pod kit

Relax. Pod kits such as the OXVA Xlim Pro 3 read the coil and cap output within limits set by the manufacturer. Stick to the coils listed for your device and the maths is handled for you.

Common questions

Do I need Ohm’s law to vape safely?

Only if you build your own coils. Pod kits and disposables are designed to run their coils within set limits, so normal users never need to calculate power.

What happens if resistance is too low?

A coil with too little resistance draws more current than the battery may safely supply. That can overheat the cell, which is why coil builders check resistance before every use.

What does 0.6Ω or 1.2Ω on a pod coil mean?

It’s the coil’s resistance. Lower numbers like 0.6Ω run warmer with bigger vapour; higher numbers like 1.2Ω run cooler with a tighter draw.

Underlying physics: Ohm’s law.

About DK Ridoy

DK Ridoy writes and reviews the buying guides on the Vape Royality Store blog. The job is simple to describe and fiddly to do: take specs from each product listing, date every price, compare devices on numbers a buyer can check, and flag anything that doesn't add up instead of guessing. Topics covered: disposable vapes, pod kits, coils and accessories, e-liquid basics, and ordering across the UAE.
